Honoring our Veterans

Displays, a procession, service, wreath, flag and three-volley gun salute expressed Bristol Glen’s Memorial Day remembrances. Two resident members of “The Greatest Generation,” veterans Phyllis Foley and Donald Robbins, proudly laid the Memorial Day wreath at the base of the flagpole as onlookers placed their hands over their hearts.

Marine veteran and Bristol Glen maintenance director, Joseph Pizzi, teamed with members of the Sussex County Marine Corps League Detachment 747 to present the colors and a three volley gun salute. The service, held outdoors under blue skies, was called to order and officiated by Herman Terpstra, Commander of Sussex County American Legion Post 213. The Post’s chaplain, Peggy Johnson, led the group in prayer recalling those who served and for peace, for which our comrades died. John-Paul Couce, Newton High School student and musician, closed the service with taps.

As part of the Life Choices Program, windows along Bristol Glen’s Main Street were adorned with military memorabilia submitted by residents, staff and Bristol Glen’s military veterans. Many photographs, original discharge papers, and a Viet Nam battle flag from the U.S.S. O’Callahan and other items pepper the displays.
