The Shores at Wesley Manor
Fitness at The Shores
The Shores at Wesley Manor has been growing their fitness program, under the direction of James Bertram, the Fitness Coordinator. The Shores fitness program includes a wide range of exercise classes and recreational activities to meet the varied and specialized needs of our residents. Classes are “Star” rated to differentiate the level of difficulty. Each Star program includes flexibility, range of motion, muscle strengthening and toning, hand-eye coordination and aerobic activities.

A 1-Star program includes simple exercise moves that are performed in a seated position. This program was specifically developed for residents in our skilled nursing and memory support residences. The 2- and 3-Star programs are also seated and offer a greater degree of physical and mental challenge. The 4-Star program, a standing class, is the most challenging and includes exercises to improve balance.

A popular recreational activity is the Step In ‘N Out Club. Club participants wear a pedometer and steps are tallied at the end of each day. The resident with the most steps wins! Other recreational activities include bocce ball, mini-golf and darts. In addition to the physical benefits of participation (muscle toning, balance, range of motion and hand-eye coordination) there is the social element for our residents. The games not only attract participants, but spectators who cheer on their favorite team.

“I am very excited to have this opportunity to develop and implement comprehensive, well-rounded fitness and recreational programs for our residents”, said Bertram. The wide-ranging fitness schedule will be complemented by Jim dedicating time in the exercise room to offer guidance and instruction on the equipment. “Physical, mental and emotional health is a life-long process. We all want to wake up each morning and greet the day with inner strength and vitality! We want our physical, mental and spiritual muscles to be strong and healthy—regular on-going participation in a fitness program helps accomplish that goal!” stated Bertram.

James Bertram has over 25 years in the fitness industry as a Certified Personal Trainer and former health club owner. Several years ago, Jim developed an interest in exercise programs specifically designed for the “50 and better” population and earned a specialty certification in Senior and Frail Elder Fitness. His article, “The Forgotten Population”, addresses the need for physical activities in assisted living communities and was published in an international fitness magazine.

When Jim joined The Shores, he developed and conducted an exercise class, which quickly gained popularity. After several months, 30 to 40 residents were attending his daily class. Recognizing the need for additional classes and activities, Jim proposed and implemented the comprehensive program we see today. The high level of attendance at every class clearly shows the need and desire of residents to stay physically active!
